Good fortune: A thrift & gift haul

It has been a hard week for a few reasons I won't be blogging about, but this is a little high point of the week (gotta think positive). I found a few things of my own, which we'll look at first, but the real gems are the items my mom found for me (read on!).

First exhibit: vintage bathing suit that looks freaking awesome on, thrifted at Value Village.
How often do you find a bathing suit and think "OH MAN I LOOK SOOOO GOOD IN THIS"? Case closed.

Exhibit Two: Vintage white wicker nautical box bag. Yes.

Exhibit Three: Roots leggings, in perfect condition, complete with marled grey (favourite) and worksock hems (other favourite)

Exhibit Four: Mid-century-style hand carved wooden candle holder, made in Nova Scotia

But here is the really good stuff.

Mom and Dad went to an auction the other night and my thoughtful mother found these (in a larger lot of stuff) for me. Three pairs of fancy antique 1930s round glasses, a 1960s-to-1980s pair of sunglasses, and a fffaaaabbbulous pair of 1950s Bausch & Lomb horn-rimmed glasses with mother of pearl inlay (which I am definitely getting refitted with lenses).

My favourites!

So much fun stuff! Will share a few more finds soon!

Old Photos of the Week: Family

More fun old pictures. Nanni, Papa, my mom & her sibs.

Just listed! Mid-century modern candlestick holders

Have you visited my Etsy Shop - also named Milk & Amber - lately? I just put these neat teak 50's candle holders up, can't wait to put a few more items on tomorrow too! I have had some great luck with sales over the weekend, the store itself is the gift that keeps on giving.

Thrift Week 2012: Mid-Century Modern Edition

This week's haul has been mostly about fashion, but there were some neat finds for the home, too. Take this mid-century modern-style vase I found at Value Village for $2.99. I've been seeing this shape everywhere, in design magazines, on Etsy, blogs, you name it. But it's not like I can just go shopping at Hollace Cluny and buy some designer ceramic vases that cost as much as rent, so you can imagine my delight at finding a knock-off here in PEI for so little! Good things come to those who thrift.

Cheers! Happy hunting!

New items on Milk & Amber Etsy Shop

Well, it took most of my afternoon and early evening, but I managed to upload quite a few new items on my Etsy shop. Pop over to check out all my items, including this neat stuff!

*Remember, if you're on PEI, I offer 30% off your purchase if you'd like to do local pick-up. Making Islanders more stylish one vintage item at a time, haha...

For Papa, lest we forget

This post is for my grandfather, George Sauer, who was drafted into the German forces in the Second World War at age 16. He was shot in the back shortly before the war was over, on duty in then-Czechoslovakia. He was rounded up with other wounded soldiers, and rather than being brought back to his home or even a city, he and the others were dumped on the side of a railway, only to be picked up by Russian soldiers and taken to a Prisoner of War camp, where he spent nine months before being released to return to Germany.

Not long after the war, he immigrated to Canada, followed by my grandmother, and decided to settle in Prince Edward Island, where "no one will ever fight a war."

Old Photos of the Week: Nanni & Papa take Montreal

I love these photos of my grandparents, back when they had first immigrated to Canada in the 1950's. This was prior to them moving to Prince Edward Island, where they eventually settled and had my mom, aunt, and uncles. I hope I can recreate these someday!

Cheers! Repurposed Bookshelf to Bar

Blame it on Mad Men, or maybe just reading too much Style at Home or House & Home, but I've been wanting a bar. A bar cart, or even just a tall table with all our booze corralled into one place. An old bookshelf didn't cross my mind. Peter suggested it in place of a table I'd been trying, and it's been working out great ever since. Needs a little more fine-tuning, but it makes for a neat set-up in an otherwise useless nook. Love it under my vintage clock, too. Cheers!
